The Center for Document Engineering is an initiative of UC Berkeley's School of Information. The CDE's mission is to invent, evaluate, and promote model-based technologies and methods that enable the automation of document-centric business processes and the implementation of business relationships as a network of document exchanges.
Using XML for encoding models of business processes and their associated documents creates an automatable, standards-based foundation for real-world business computing systems that bridges the traditional chasms between design, implementation, and evolution. The CDE serves as a focal point for research, development, and educational activities that span the academic and operational sides of the university. Collaboration with industry and campus computing units ensures bi-directional technology transfer and relevance in research and graduate training. The CDE collects and disseminates XML schemas, best practices, tool evaluations, code samples, and other content for building web services and applications.
The Center for Document Engineering is led by Dr. Robert Glushko , an Adjunct Professor at the School of Information and a Silicon Valley veteran with twenty years of experience in information management, electronic publishing, and Internet commerce. Organizations interested in becoming sponsors or research affiliates of the CDE are invited to contact Dr. Glushko at glushko at ischool.berkeley.edu.
