Ο Robert Dale είναι, μεταξύ άλλων, διευθυντής του Centre for Language Technology του Macquarie University, Program Leader for Language Technology του Capital Markets Cooperative Research Centre, διευθυντής της εταιρείας Language Technology, Editor του περιοδικού Computational Linguistics και συγγραφέας του μηνιαίου άρθρου "Industry Watch" του περιοδικού Natural Language Engineering.

Ομιλητής: Robert Dale, Macquarie University, Sydney
Τίτλος ομιλίας: "Language Technology: An Overview of Commercial Applications and Underlying Technologies"
Language technology is all about getting machines to do useful things with human language. Language Technology is all around you, on your desktop when you use Microsoft Word's grammar checker, on the web when you search via Google, and on the phone when you book a taxi by talking to a machine. This presentation is intended for those who are not researchers in this area, but are curious to know what is involved in developing applications like these. I'll survey the present and future uses of language technology, and look under the covers to see what's involved in making them work. The focus is on developing a big-picture view of what's possible and what's not; prior technical exposure in the area is not required. Does language technology need linguistics, or is it all just a bunch of engineers hacking away? Come and find out!

Ομιλητής: Robert Dale, Macquarie University, Sydney
Τίτλος ομιλίας: "The Generation of Referring Expressions: Where We've Been, How We Got Here, and Where We're Going"
The task of referring expression generation is concerned with determining what semantic content should be used in a reference to an intended referent so that the hearer will be able to identify that referent. The task has been a focus of interest within natural language generation at least since the early 1980s, in part because the problem appears relatively well-defined. Over the last 25 years, a range of algorithms and approaches have been proposed and explored, making this the most intensely studied problem in natural language generation; and yet, even a casual analysis of real human-authored texts suggests that we have a long way to go in terms of providing an explanation for the range of real linguistic behaviour that we find. In this talk, I'll provide a bird's eye view of research in the area to date, to characterise where we are now, and indicate what I believe are the key directions for future research in the area.
