take a loOk!

Volvo 3CC

The Volvo 3CC concept car, a rocket-shaped three-seater, can accommodate the full range of power systems, from traditional gasoline and alternative fuels such as ethanol, to hybrid and all electric. Three thousand lithium-ion batteries, just like those used in laptop computers, give it the equivalent of 105 horsepower. The 3CC has the aerodynamics of a two-seat sports car, but can slip a third passenger, or perhaps two children, in a single seat in the back.

Image

Ford Mercury Meta One

The Mercury Meta One combines a hybrid transmission with a twin-turbocharged V-6 diesel engine calibrated to run on a bio-diesel blend (fuel made from natural, renewable sources such as vegetable oils). The combination is designed to produce the power of a V-10, with emission levels clean enough to meet California's Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV) requirement.

Image

Daihatsu UFE III

Daihatsu, the Japanese car company known for compacts, is on the third generation of the UFE (which stand for Ultra Fuel Economy). This mini-hybrid vehicle can transport three people—one upfront, and two in the back. The hybrid system comprises a 660-cubic centimeter direct-injection gasoline engine, two motors, and a nickel-metal hydride battery. Its estimated fuel economy is 169 miles per gallon.

Image

Nissan Pivo

Nissan has developed a bubble-shaped, three-seater electric car called the Pivo—short for pivot. It runs exclusively on electricity. The cabin sits atop a wheeled platform that can swivel 360 degrees, doing away with the need to reverse when emerging from narrow spaces.

Image

BMW X3

The X3 combines a next-generation direct-injection inline six-cylinder engine with an electric motor—and a supercapacitor instead of the rechargeable batteries most hybrids use. A supercapacitor discharges all of its energy in a quick burst of power. Then, the gasoline engine takes over until the regenerative braking can recharge the supercapacitor for another quick burst. The system provides a modest 20% improvement in fuel economy over current models.

Image

Toyota Volta

The Volta's 3.3-liter V-6 gas engine is located behind the rear axle and isn't connected directly to the wheels. Instead, movement is provided by two electric engines, one per axle, offering the safety benefits of all-wheel drive. But the real gain of packaging a large internal-combustion engine with two electric motors is rip-roaring speed: The 408-horsepower hybrid drive can go from 0 to 60 in 4 seconds.

Image

GM Saab Aero X

The two-seat Saab Aero X doesn't have doors or a fixed windshield. Instead, the entire face of the vehicle opens up. Inside, the Saab Aero X's cockpit completely eliminating conventional dials and buttons. Instead, Saab displays data on glass-like acrylic "clear zones" in graphic 3-D images. The drivetrain is just as innovative as the body design. The Aero X combines turbo-charging and the use of bio-fuel to deliver 400-horsepower performance without burning a drop of petroluem. The V6 engine is fueled entirely by 100% ethanol. This reduces the tank-to-wheel carbon emissions of the vehicle to exactly zero. Can't find pure ethanol? No problem for the Aero X. The engine management system will make adjustments for any gasoline-ethanol blend.

Image

The Volkswagen Chameleon

On the outside, the Volkswagen Chameleon Microbus looks like it rolled right out of the set of a 1960s surfer movie. But times have changed in the world of energy and technology. Volkswagen retrofitted the 1964 Deluxe Microbus for a new generation by installing an all-electric drive powered by lithium polymer batteries. Ten 30-volt batteries under the van’s floor provide a range of about 100 miles. A recharge takes about 6 hours. Surfboards mounted on the roof are lined with flexible solar panels that provide an additional source of energy. The vehicle needs all the energy it can find to power an arsenal of interactive digital cabin features, including imbedded touch-pads and speech activated controls. Don't expect to ever see this vehicle on the road. Volkswagen is using the Chameleon strictly as a marketing tool to showcase a movie-fantasy future of automotive electronics.

Image

The Honda FCX Concept

The Honda FCX Concept uses a secret weapon to deliver more power than its predecessor fuel cell vehicles: gravity. Honda calls it a "3V" system: "Vertical gas flow, vertebral layout, and volume-efficient packaging." In the 3V schema, oxygen and hydrogen flow from the top to the bottom of the fuel cell stack and the fuel cells are arranged vertically in the center tunnel for more efficient packaging of the fuel cells. With these improvements, the FCX fuel-cell car now has a driving range of 354 miles—a 30 percent improvement from the 2005 model—and a maximum speed of 100 miles per hour. The vehicle can driven in temperatures as low as minus 86 degrees Fahrenheit. The super-slick Honda FCX Concept has a long and ultra-low profile that is anything but vertical.

Image

GM Sequel

The Sequel is based on a design that puts all propulsion systems, steering, braking and chassis components packed into the car's 11-inch underbelly. By packing all the functionality into what the company calls a "skateboard" chassis, GM claims they'll have greater freedom for the car's interior and exterior design. GM has been working on the skateboard approach for a number of years, and the Sequel is apparently their breakthrough. With the company's advances in fuel cells, by-wire technology, and wheel hub motors, GM has doubled the range to 300 miles—on its hydrogen supply—and halved the 0-60 times to under ten seconds.

Top Five Cars from the Shanghai Auto Show

~προσοχή. ακολουθεί post στα αγγλικά~

he bustling megalopolis of Shanghai is a good place – in fact, better than most others – to have an auto show. This city of almost twenty million people, situated on the banks of the Huangpu River, is at the forefront of what the modern Chinese city has come to embody in the 21st Century - evolution. With skyscrapers that reach to the heavens situated next to the ancient parts of the city, Shanghai is where the East meets the West and where the global "Next" is created.

China is also a big market for the global automotive industry and the place where corporations are hedging their bets on the future. It is also a whole different world. In China, General Motors is the number one sales leader. Audi and BMW both make special long wheelbase models - those who can afford a luxury car usually have a driver to go along with it. Furthermore, automobile sales in China keep growing at a torrid pace year over year.

That said, China is still a country with its learner's permit. The country's burgeoning market is so new that there is still a sense of excitement about its nascent automotive culture.

That excitement was palpable at the 12th Shanghai International Automobile & Manufacturing Technology Exhibition. The 120,000 square meters of the New International Expo Centre were overflowing with hundreds of cars and thousands of journalists, fog machine smoke rising to the rafters and the sound of music blasting from the packed stands.

The floor was littered with a wide array of different models – from the odd, tiny El Camino-type Changfeng concept to Scion-like Great Wall Coolbear. Below are some of the highlights from the Shanghai show and, perhaps, the very near future. In China, to paraphrase Thomas L. Friedman, not only is the world flat, but so are the roads.

1. Audi Cross Coupe Quattro

http://f3.yahoofs.com/ymg/autos_content ... 9Cb8beqD37
Stefan Sielaff, head of Audi Design, said the main idea behind the Audi Cross Coupe Quattro was "to combine the character of an SUV with the lifestyle of a coupe and create a sporty statement with an active feel." Sielaff's team lowered the head points of the vehicle by integrating the tailgate hinges into the roof rails, thus creating the sleek coupe-like lines. There is also a large fabric folding roof that extends from the A-pillar to near the tailgate to complete the package. Sielaff said the concept was the younger sibling to the Q5 and Q7. As Audi's first concept to début in China, the Cross Coupe Quattro features such interior touches as matte gold and polished aluminum detailing, Chinese character-like laser etching on the MMI knob and, an especially nice touch, a porcelain tea cup in the cup holder.
http://f3.yahoofs.com/ymg/autos_content ... 9C4yK_olaN
What We Think:

Traditionally Audi doesn't show a concept car unless they plan on making some sort of production derivative. Expect to see a Q3 based off this knockout sometime in the near future.

2. BMW Concept CS

http://f3.yahoofs.com/ymg/autos_content ... 9C44LClC5C
ollowing Mercedes-Benz and Audi's lead, BMW presented their own version of a four-door coupe, the Concept CS. At 200.8 inches long, the Concept CS with its long hood, short overhang, low-slung muscular lines and wide rear haunches – better to show off the 21-inch wheels – belies a powerful new design language from the mind of BMW designer Chris Bangle. The Concept CS looks to compete with the Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG, the Aston Martin Rapide and the forthcoming Porsche Panamera. When asked why BMW chose the Shanghai show to début the concept, Thomas Plucinsky, Product & Technology Communications Manager said, "We see China as a growth market long term and the launch of the Concept CS helps us build a stronger presence here." With sales of 45,000 vehicles in 2006, an increase of 27% from 2005, BMW is onto something right.
http://f3.yahoofs.com/ymg/autos_content ... 9CVQev9dOo
What We Think:

With its dazzling good looks and strong presence, Chris Bangle once again drives BMW down a futuristic and eye-catching road. Simply Stunning.

3. Buick Riviera Concept

http://f3.yahoofs.com/ymg/autos_content ... 9CUfR1fFe7
Take a drive down any street in Shanghai and you'll see numerous Buicks - which makes sense - China is Buick's largest market in the world. The Shanghai show presents a perfect place for Buick to showcase their new international design language with the Riviera concept. Developed in tandem with the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center in China, Ed Wellburn, vice president of GM Global Design said, "Developing and launching the Riviera in China underscores the diversity, strength and depth of the GM global design network." With its tautly wrapped carbon fiber skin, gullwing doors, large greenhouse, 21-inch wheels pushed to the corners and hybrid drivetrain, the Rivera takes a classic American – and now Chinese – nameplate into the future.
http://f3.yahoofs.com/ymg/autos_content ... 9CMf6Pa51b
What We Think:

Buick, which has a long history of concepts dating back to the classic Harley Earl designed 1938 Y-Job, shows with the futuristic-leaning Riviera that the nameplate still has a lot of mileage left in the tank.

4. Chery Shooting Sport

http://f3.yahoofs.com/ymg/autos_content ... 9CJ7E1a3Ct
Chery has a long 'are they or aren't they' history of coming to the states. As one of China's largest automotive manufacturers, Chery could soon be in a position to make that leap across the Pacific. The Shooting Sport concept, which takes its design cues from Audi's Shooting Brake concept from the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show, looks like a winner to us, design homage aside. While the 1.6-liter, 87 horsepower engine lacks in power, this concept is a good start.
http://f3.yahoofs.com/ymg/autos_content ... 9CfAUdbT5v
What We Think:

As the saying goes, if you steal, steal from the best. With the looks of the never-to-be-made Shooting Brake and a price that would be cheap-as-sin if ever made, the Shooting Sport could do for Chery what the Excel did for Hyundai in 1986 – launch a brand name.

5. BYD F8

http://f3.yahoofs.com/ymg/autos_content ... 9CpDbJVFeg
BYD – Build Your Dream – is another of China's up and coming nameplates. Their F8, which looks like a Mercedes-Benz CLK from the front and a Chrysler Sebring from the side and rear, presents an interesting quandary: we know it looks like a mash-up of two cars, but can we still like it? The answer is yes. As China's first convertible with a glass hardtop, retractable no less, the F8 has a winning underdog feel to it.
What We Think:

So this is what would happen if Daimler and Chrysler actually designed cars together. With room for four, it looks like fun to us.

να και μια πιο... "μελλοντική" έκδοση..

Mustang από 2010:

Image

PRESS RELEASE

Los Angeles, Nov. 28, 2006 – The 2005 Ford Mustang captured the hearts and minds of millions of fans and future owners when the all-new model debuted. But the proportions and design of Ford's first purpose-built muscle car in 30-plus years caught the eyes and sparked the imaginations of a pair of the world's leading coachbuilders in Italy as well.

Image

"When we saw the new Mustang, we knew two things: It was the best we'd seen since the original, and we had to get our hands on one," said Fabrizio Giugiaro, styling director of Italdesign – Giugiaro S.P.A. "We still believe it's important to show the automotive world pure exercises in style that interpret key models reflecting the history and image of important brands."

Image

So in early 2005, Giugiaro pitched J Mays, Ford Motor Company's group vice president, Design and chief creative officer, on his idea to do an Italian job on the beloved Mustang. The result: Mustang by Giugiaro – a one-of-a-kind concept powered by Ford Racing technologies, marking the Italian coachbuilder's first reveal at the inaugural November Los Angeles Auto Show.

Image

"It seemed only fitting," said Mays. "This design study reinforces the global appeal of Mustang, yet it's right at home in L.A. – America's most enthusiastic performance and muscle car market. Plus, design icon Giorgetto Giugairo's offer to work his magic on Mustang alongside his son underscores the timelessness allure of Ford's most iconic car."

Image

Design aficionados will remember that the senior Giugiaro – who last year celebrated his 50 th anniversary in the business by designing a custom-made Ferrari, the GG50 – created the 1965 Bertone Mustang. The car, which was unmistakably Italian in its interpretation, became the first European-styled car to make its international debut in America following the end of World War II.

Image

The senior Giugiaro's portfolio includes concept and production designs for nearly every automaker in the world – from Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Volkswagen to Mazda, Lotus and Bugatti. Since joining ItalDesign, the family firm, in 1990, Fabrizio Giugiaro has helped deliver key global designs as well, but American automotive icons have long captured his attention. He designed the Chevrolet Corvette Moray, unveiled in early 2003, and was eager to expand the collection of Giugiaro-interpreted American metal.

Image

Fabrizio Giugiaro led the 2-D design process on the Mustang by Giugiaro concept, allowing him to deliver a complete exterior model from the family's Turin, Italy, studios in just four months. Visually, the Mustang by Giugiaro appears more compact than the production car, thanks to a reduction of the rear overhang and a signature Giugiaro "trick" of tapering the angles on the car to the limit of its mechanical outlines.Still, the Italian version of America's most popular muscle car hasn't lost any of its swagger.

Image

The vibrant orange concept is wider than the production version. The Giugiaros added 30 millimeters to the front, gradually expanding the width by a full 80 millimeters toward the rear, which is typical in Italian design. With its longer hood and the trunk barely visible, the car looks more of a fastback in side view. But details throughout reinforce the freedom and rebellion synonymous with Mustang. Fabrizio Giugiaro's favorites include:

Image

* The interior – featuring a dramatic instrument panel that sweeps the width of the car; circular gauges that project from behind the steering wheel; dark brown horsehide-covered headrests with horse logo accents; and seat cushions and backrests elaborately upholstered in dark brown mottled horse hides.

Image

* The single curved glass panel that bridges the windshield and rear window, serving as the concept's roof. Produced by Solutia of Detroit, the panel is made from a special type of crystal that filters out 100 percent of UVA rays while providing unfettered vista views.

* Its dramatic doors, which are hinged at the base of the upright A-pillar and open vertically at the touch of a button.

* Bespoke taillights, which are three separate elements as found on the 1964 Mustang – but reinterpreted into a more dramatic arrow shape that links to the louver panels that replace the rear side windows.

* The visible curl that sweeps into the crest of the concept's carbon fiber fenders, hinting at tail fins that defined American cars of the '50s.

* The sporting-but-elegant unique 20-inch rims, fitted with 275/40 tires on the front and larger 315/35 tires on the rear.

As its wheels and tires suggest, the Mustang by Giugiaro is more than just a tribute to Mustang design. It also is an exclamation of the car's heritage of performance. The concept features a powertrain and chassis enhanced in conjunction with Ford Racing – which is responsible for Ford Motor Company motorsports development and operations.

Ford Racing's efforts include the development and sale of a race-prepared version of the Mustang, called the FR500C, for the Grand-Am KONI Challenge Series. In its first season alone, the FR500C scored five wins in the 2005 GS Class, including the manufacturers' championship, in which Mustang bested other production-based sports cars, including the BMW M3 and Porsche 911. This Mustang, a turn-key race car sold to privateers, provided the inspiration for the Mustang by Giugiaro concept's performance and handling attributes.

Ford Racing improved on the already-robust 300 horsepower all-aluminum 4.6-liter 3-valve V-8 engine in the production Mustang GT by adding an intercooled twin-screw supercharger for the new concept. Additional improvements include fuel injectors from the Ford GT and a unique engine calibration. Engine air intake is increased with a larger 95 mm mass air meter and a conical air filter. Exhaust performance is enhanced with new Ford Racing mufflers and an X-pipe. The powertrain upgrades deliver an estimated 500 horsepower, complete with a boost level of 11 psi from the Ford Racing supercharger. A high-efficiency Ford Racing aluminum radiator provides increased cooling capability to accompany the extra 200 horsepower provided under hood. Under the car, the FR500C-inspired chassis tuning is accomplished with a tailored Ford Racing Handling Pack. This package, available through Ford Racing for the Mustang GT, adds new Dynamic-tuned dampers, lowering springs and anti-sway bars. The changes give the car a lower stance while sharpening handling response. The car rides approximately 1.5 inches lower than the production Mustang GT.

"The Mustang by Giugiaro drives as good as it looks," said Fabrizio Giugiaro. "After taking it to the limits on streets outside of Turin, I can honestly say this car was well worth the 30,000 hours of blood, sweat and tears that we invested to create a modern performance classic."
