Abstract
As the healthcare industry, while still growing, is considered the world’s largest industry, governments are trying to increase its efficiency. There are several directives evolved around the world in order to identify the problems and inefficiencies of the industry and try to minimise them. These efforts are directed to problems related to patient safety and the inefficient management of healthcare resources. The role of health informatics is to provide the right tools in order to both improve patient safety and the efficiency of the management of healthcare resources. The case study is focused on the drug logistics activities that are found to cause medication errors, when a drug that is needed is not in stock and the waste of funds, as drugs that expire are destroyed.
As the problem area is identified, the case study must consider the techniques and concepts of the science of logistics that have already been applied and used successfully in other industries and then consider their application in healthcare. Based on the directions provided by governments around the world, regarding the management of hospital logistics and patient safety systems, a gap is discovered and surfaces the need for a new system. This system must solve the problems of drug stock out incidents and the waste of drugs that expire. The concept of virtual inventories and a multi attribute classification technique that have proven their values in other industries are considered as a novel approach to solve the problems in healthcare and contribute to the effort to transform the industry into an efficient industry and also increase the patient security levels saving healthcare funds at the same time.
