We are pleased to invite you to our next Open Seminar organized by AIT on Monday, November the 15th, at 16:30. The Seminar that will take place in amphitheatre 3A (3rd Floor), is entitled “Internet Network Management: Evolution and Research Trends” and will be conducted by Dr. John Soldatos, Assistant Professor at AIT.

You may register at cefs@ait.edu.gr until Monday noon, November the 15th.

Abstract:

During the last decade, IP based networks and services have evolved, matured and proliferated. However, few advances have taken place in the area of network management of IP networks. The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is still the dominant protocol for managing enterprise IP networks, as well as the Internet. While SNMP features high penetration and a large base of applications, network managers identify several limitations of the SNMP framework, mainly relating to configuration management, application development complexity and scalability. Several NM technologies have been proposed and/or adopted towards alleviating limitations of the conventional SNMP manager-agent paradigm and decentralizing management tasks (e.g., distributed object technologies (DOT) (CORBA, RMI), Web based Enterprise Management (WBEM), Java based Management). Recently, XML technologies have been also introduced in IP network management and are currently researched. This seminar will present these efforts (i.e. DOT, WBEM, Java based Management, XML techniques), with particular emphasis on techniques making use of XML technologies and the Web Services paradigm. The seminar will end-up illustrating an architecture supporting XML based network management applications. This architecture specifies a runtime environment that parses XML documents containing operations for individual devices, as well as for heterogeneous mutli-device networks. Based on this environment network managers can define operations featuring high level semantics and accordingly produce applications, simply through XML authoring. Application development based on XML authoring can boost flexibility, cost-effectiveness and enhance the programmability of network management operations. A prototype open-source XML network management system (namely the XMLNET system) based on the introduced architecture will be also presented. More information on the XMLNET system implementation is accessible at:
