Μπορεί από παντού ν'ακούγονται διθυραμβικά λόγια για το iPhone, όμως ο πραγματικός βασιλιάς των κινητών τηλεφώνων δεν είναι η Apple. Είναι η Nokia, η οποία κατάφερε να φτάσει το μερίδιο της στην παγκόσμια αγορά της κινητής τηλεφωνίας μέχρι το πάρα πολύ υψηλό ποσοστό του 40%, παρά την πτώση που σημειώθηκε στη Βόρεια Αμερική.

Ακόμα παραμένει ο μεγαλύτερος κατασκευαστής κινητών συσκευών σε όλον τον κόσμο, κι επικαλείται την έλλειψη σ'εξαρτήματα σαν την αιτία της μείωσης πωλήσεων στις Η.Π.Α. Είτε αληθεύει είτε δεν αληθεύει αυτό, η Nokia εξακολουθεί να σχεδιάζει να φέρει 12 νέα κινητά ειδικά στις Η.Π.Α. μέσα στο 2008.

Αυτά είναι ενδιαφέροντα νέα για την Apple, που πάντα θα έχει ν'ανταγωνίζεται με τη Nokia και με τη Motorola στις Η.Π.Α. Έναν τομέα στον οποίο οι Nokia τους έχει ήδη νικήσει είναι το entry-level, με συσκευές κάτω των $100 συνεχώς να σχεδιάζονται. Θα είναι πολύ ενδιαφέρον να δούμε την Apple να δοκιμάζει κινήσεις ανάλογες μ'εκείνες των μεγαλύτερων εταιριών.

Την ώρα που ο Έλληνας καταναλωτής καλείται να κάνει ένα σωρό πατέντες για να βρει «ξεκλείδωτο» iPhone σε… προνομιακή τιμή, η αγορά της Αμερικής εμφανίζει κάποια ενδιαφέροντα στατιστικά.

Το προϊόν της Apple είναι μακράν το πιο hot gadget για το 2007, ενώ δεν είναι λίγοι αυτοί που ξεκίνησαν την εισαγωγή συσκευών πριν καν κυκλοφορήσουν σε Αγγλία, Γερμανία και άλλες μεγάλες ευρωπαϊκές χώρες.

Σύμφωνα με το Bloomberg, πάνω από ένα εκατομμύριο συσκευές από τα 3.75 εκατομμύρια που έχουν πουληθεί συνολικά, είναι «ξεκλείδωτα» και λειτουργούν εκτός των… προβλεπόμενων δικτύων.

Αν και το θέμα είναι γνωστό στην εταιρία του Steve Jobs, δεν φαίνεται να καίγεται να το αντιμετωπίσει.

Αυτό που αναμένουμε ακόμα σε μια χώρα που ο μέσος Έλληνας έχει δύο συσκευές είναι να ενημερωθούμε αν, πότε και σε ποια τιμή θα κυκλοφορήσει…

Η πολιτική της Apple για κυκλοφορία νέων προϊόντων ή καλύτερα νέων εκδόσεων για τα προϊόντα της είναι εμφανής τα τελευταία χρόνια. Στον ίδιο κανόνα ανήκουν πλέον και τα iPhone και iPod Touch.

Όπως αποκάλυψε η εταιρεία του Steve Jobs, σε λίγες ημέρες θα ξεκινήσουν να διατίθενται οι εκδόσεις 32GB του iPod Touch και 16GB του iPhone, στην προτεινόμενη τιμή λιανικής που φτάνει τα 499 δολάρια. O Greg Joswiak, αντιπρόεδρος του τμήματος iPod και iPhone, τόνισε πως «για ορισμένους χρήστες δεν υπάρχει ποτέ αρκετή μνήμη. Πλέον, οι καταναλωτές των προϊόντων μας μπορούν να αποθηκεύσουν πολύ περισσότερο υλικό στο πιο επαναστατικό τηλέφωνο και την καλύτερη Wi-Fi φορητή συσκευή στον κόσμο».

Τόσο το iPod Touch 32GB, όσο και το iPhone 16GB, θα έρχονται με την έκδοση 1.1.3 firmware εγκατεστημένη. Για τους Έλληνες καταναλωτές, δυστυχώς, δεν υπάρχουν ακόμη νεότερα σχετικά με το iPhone, σε σχέση με την επίσημη ημερομηνία και την τιμή διάθεσης...

Steve Jobs pans Flash on the iPhone

Over the last year, many observers have wondered when Apple would deliver Adobe Flash support on the iPhone. At the company's shareholder meeting on Tuesday, Steve Jobs made comments that indicate that support isn't coming anytime soon, thanks to architectural limitations in Flash itself. A full explanation of those limitations follow.

Apple “Roadmap” Special Event Results - March 6th, 2008

The event started off with Steve Jobs welcoming everyone and going over some stats that show that the iPhone is ahead of everyone…except RIM - and they’re looking to change that.

So, the iPhone will be getting a slew of Enterprise features including: Push Email, Push Calendar, Push Contacts, Global Address List, Cisco VPM, Certificates and WPA2/ 802.1x, Security Policies, Device Config, Remote Wipe, ActiveSync and Exchange support (which will be native on the iPhone).

For those interested, Phil Schiller, not Steve Jobs, demoed all this Microsoft tech on the iPhone.

Scott Forstall then came out to cover the iPhone SDK. He first mentioned several web apps that are popular, mentioning that 20% of all Bank of America mobile banking was done through the iPhone. Then he announced that starting today, developers will be able to use the same SDK that Apple uses to create iPhone applications. Which means, of course, that they will have to use OS X.

They showed off games developed by EA (SPORE!!!!), SEGA (Super Monkey Ball), and a long awaited NATIVE CHAT APP from a little company called AOL. Plus a great looking sales app.

All of this will be available to iPod Touch customers as well, but a small fee will have to be charged for the software upgrade.

Then Steve dropped the bomb.

The App Store. It’s installer.app from Apple. You can search for applications, buy them (or get them free), and download them right onto your iPhone.

Developers will get 70% of revenue, and there is NO CHARGE to developers for FREE apps. You can download the SDK in a few hours. It costs $99 to become a developer.

No malicious apps. No porn.

Beta goes out today for the SDK.

There was just one more thing…

VC Capitalist firm KPCB announced the “iFund”. a $100,000,000 (yes, you read those ‘0s’ right) fund for developers wanting funding for developing on the iPhone.

We’ll be getting everything in JUNE - with the release of iPhone 2.0.

After the event, Steve Jobs and co stayed behind to talk to the press and answer a few questions.

They revealed that there will be an electronic certificate attached to apps so that if someone writes a malicious software app they can track them down “and tell there parents”.

VoIP is perfectly acceptable for Wi-Fi according to Jobs.

and the roll out will be international, so all users world wide will benefit.

Finally, parental controls will also be included in the iPhone 2.0 software, allowing parents to turn off features like Safari and the App Store.at.

In order to accommodate Enterprise users tied to Exchange, Apple has also licensed Microsoft's proprietary ActiveSync protocol and will be delivering built-in support for talking to Exchange using its native language. This will enable iPhone users to gain access to server updates pushed from Exchange as they are updated on the server, rather than requested by the client at regular intervals like a typical email program.

Push Email - delivers messages as they arrive
Push contacts - updates information as it is changed
Push calendar - delivers meeting requests and changes in real time
Global Address List - provides access to the company directory of employees


Enterprise Network Support

Additionally, Apple is adding broader support for using the iPhone with secured networks. The iPhone 2.0 update, expected in late June, will add support for additional VPN protocol types, including the popular Cisco IPsec VPN. Virtual Private Networks allow remote users to authenticate with a company server and gain access to local resources, including email and private corporate Intranets, from anywhere on the open Internet.

The iPhone update will also add support for authentication via password, two-factor token, or digital certificates, and include support for WPA2 Enterprise authentication using 802.1x for corporate and institutional WiFi networks. The iPhone currently supports WPA2 Personal for connecting to WiFi networks with simple password authentication.

Most large installations use the 802.1x protocol for controlling access to their wireless networks, based on a list of accounts managed by a central directory server. Support for the protocol is already provided in Mac OS X, but iPhone and iPod Touch users have been left unable to connect to Enterprise WiFi networks both in corporate circles and on many university campuses.

Η αναμονή για τους developers τελείωσε: το iPhone SDK ανακοινώθηκε χθες στο ειδικό event της Apple από τον Steve Jobs, δημιουργώντας φρενίτιδα στους προγραμματιστές. Το iPhone SDK διατίθεται δωρεάν από το site της εταιρείας και έχει μέγεθος περίπου 2.1Gb, ενώ απαιτείται ένα Apple ID για να το κατεβάσετε.

Για να δημιουργήσετε τις δικές σας εφαρμογές για το iPhone, απαιτείται η τελευταία έκδοση του Mac OS X, Leopard, υπολογιστή Mac με επεξεργασία Intel, την πλατφόρμα ανάπτυξης εφαρμογών Xcode και βέβαια το SDK. Αν και η διάθεση του SDK είναι δωρεάν, για να μπορέσετε να υποβάλλετε τις εφαρμογές σας προς έγκριση θα πρέπει να πληρώσετε μια εισφορά της τάξης των 99 δολλαρίων στην Apple.

Το site της Apple Developer Connection «γονάτισε» χθες από τις αιτήσεις για το iPhone SDK, με αποτέλεσμα τα downloads να αργούν απελπιστικά. Έχουν αρχίσει όμως ήδη να διαρρέουν εικόνες από το περιβάλλον του iPhone SDK, ενώ οι προγραμματιστές ετοιμάζουν πυρετωδώς τις εφαρμογές τους για το νέο, συναρπαστικό iPhone περιβάλλον.

Adobe confirms they are bringing Flash to the iPhone

The Wallstreet Journal reports that Adobe’s Chief Executive Shantanu Narayen has confirmed that the company will be bringing Flash to the iPhone.

“We believe Flash is synonymous with the Internet experience, and we are committed to bringing Flash to the iPhone,” Narayen said. “We have evaluated (the software developer tools) and we think we can develop an iPhone Flash player ourselves.”

While politics have often been blamed for the lack of Flash on the iPhone, Steve Jobs has clearly stated the reasons for the lack of Flash on the device. In an interview just a few short weeks ago, Jobs stated that Flash Lite wasn’t powerful enough, and that the desktop plugin for Flash wouldn’t run well on the iPhone. Something in the middle was needed. Now it looks like Adobe will be providing that something.

There is no estimated time of release yet announced

Apple's patent for an LCD display that also takes photos, video

As rumors swirl over the possibility of a 3G iPhone with video conferencing capabilities, it may be of some interest to recall an earlier patent filing from Apple for an 'integrated sensing display' capable of serving as both a display screen and a digital camera.

The filing, which predates the iPhone's release by nearly three years, describes a new breed of LCD display that could simultaneously take photos while continuing its role as the primary display screen of an electronics device or computer monitor.

The idea behind the invention is to wedge thousands of microscopic image sensors between the LCD cells that make up the display, where each sensor would be responsible for capturing a piece of the overall photo. Those pieces would then be stitched together by software to recreate the complete image capture.

According to the filing, made back in June of 2004, the tiny image sensors could also have variable focal lengths in order to zoom and focus the image: "The lens might either be physically moved or have its properties altered. In the latter case, the lens might be made of a material that changes its refractive index in response to electrical stimulus or a magnetic field."

«To επόμενο τρίμηνο» εκτιμάται ότι θα παρουσιαστεί το iPhone 3G
Η νέα έκδοση του iPhone με υποστήριξη για δίκτυα κινητής τηλεφωνίας τρίτης γενιάς θα αρχίσει να παράγεται το Μάιο και θα παρουσιαστεί στην αγορά το δεύτερο τρίμηνο του έτους, εκτιμά αναλυτής της Τράπεζας της Αμερικής.

Σύμφωνα με το Reuters, ο αναλυτής Σκοτ Κρεγκ εκτιμά με βάση τις πηγές του ότι η παραγωγή του νέου iPhone θα επιταχυνθεί τον Ιούνιο έτσι ώστε μέχρι το τέλος του χρόνου να έχει φτάσει έως και τα 8 εκατομμύρια τηλέφωνα.

Πολλοί άλλοι αναλυτές, αναφέρει το πρακτορείο, εκτιμούν ότι το μοντέλο 3G θα παρουσιαστεί στη διάρκεια συνεδρίου ανάπτυξης που προγραμματίζει η Apple τον Ιούνιο.

Η εταιρεία αρνήθηκε να σχολιάσει τις εκτιμήσεις. Η εταιρεία τηλεπικοινωνιών AT&T, με την οποία συνεργάζεται αποκλειστικά η Apple στην αγορά των ΗΠΑ, είχε δηλώσει πέρυσι ότι το iPhone 3G θα είναι διαθέσιμο εντός του 2008.

Πάνω από 4 εκατ. iPhone έχουν πουληθεί στις ΗΠΑ και στις λίγες ευρωπαϊκές χώρες όπου είναι διαθέσιμο από την παρουσίασή του πέρυσι τον Ιούνιο.

Όπως είχε ανακοινώσει τότε η Apple, το iPhone δεν υποστηρίζει δίκτυα 3G λόγω της υψηλής κατανάλωσης ρεύματος, που θα μείωνε την απόδοση της μπαταρίας.

Συμφωνία Vodafone - Apple για τη διάθεση του iPhone στην ελληνική αγορά

Συμφωνία με την Apple για την πώληση της συσκευής iPhone στην ελληνική αγορά υπέγραψε η Vodafone. Η συμφωνία αφορά την Ελλάδα και άλλες δέκα χώρες σε όλο τον κόσμο.

Στην ανακοίνωση της Vodafone που μετέδωσε το ειδησεογραφικό πρακτορείο Reuters αναφέρεται:

«Εντός του έτους, οι πελάτες της Vodafone στην Αυστραλία, την Τσεχία, την Αίγυπτο, την Ελλάδα, την Ιταλία, την Ινδία, την Πορτογαλία τη Νέα Ζηλανδία, την Τουρκία και την Ν.Αφρική θα μπορούν να αγοράσουν το iPhone για χρήση μέσω του δικτύου της εταιρείας.»

Piper: none of Vodafone's iPhone deals exclusive

Vodafone's announcement of ten national iPhone deals is noteworthy for the lack of exclusives associated with the contracts, according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster.

In an investment note, Munster notes that carriers to date have been quick to trumpet any exclusivity contracts they might receive -- a behavior unusually absent from Vodafone's release. The telecoms firm is already known to be sharing the spotlight in Italy with Telecom Italia, which also has rights to the device.

An open model across multiple nations is likely to hurt Apple's revenue share starting in 2009, but may be compensated by the expansion allowed by the new model. Vodafone's announcement by itself came as a surprise, Munster says.

"This announcement is both sooner and more expansive that we were expecting," he explains. "With the announcement of these 10 additional markets, the iPhone's international rollout is about 6 months ahead of our original expectations."

Presenting at its annual developers conference Monday, Apple introduced the new iPhone 3G, which combines all the features of original iPhone with 3G networking, built-in GPS technology, and iPhone 2.0 software.

In the US the new iPhone 3G will be priced at just $199 for the 8GB model and $299 for the 16GB model when it goes on sale July 11. The new touch-screen handset will also be available in more than 70 countries later this year, beginning with customer availability in 22 countries -- Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and the US -- also on July 11.

"Just one year after launching the iPhone, we're launching the new iPhone 3G that is twice as fast at half the price," said Apple chief executive Steve Jobs. "iPhone 3G supports Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync right out of the box, runs the incredible third party apps created with the iPhone SDK, and will be available in more than 70 countries around the world this year."

iPhone 3G gives users ever faster access to the Internet and email over their cellular network with quad-band GSM and tri-band HSDPA for voice and data connectivity around the world. It supports Wi-Fi, 3G and EDGE networks and automatically switches between them to ensure the fastest possible download speeds. The new iPhone 3G also makes it easier to multi-task with simultaneous voice and data communications, so with iPhone 3G you can browse the web, get map directions, or check your email while you are on a call.

Each iPhone 3G will include iPhone 2.0 software which includes the new App Store, providing users with native applications in a variety of categories including games, business, news, sports, health, reference and travel. The App Store on iPhone works over cellular networks and Wi-Fi, which means it is accessible from just about anywhere, so you can purchase and download applications wirelessly and start using them instantly. Some applications are even free and the App Store notifies you when application updates are available. The App Store will be available in 62 countries at launch, Apple said.

The 8GB iPhone 3G will retail for $199 and come only in black.

Additional features available with the iPhone 2.0 software include the ability to do real-time mapping and track your progress with GPS technology, mass move and delete multiple email messages, search for contacts, access a new scientific calculator, turn on parental control restrictions for specified content, save images directly from a web page or email them to your iPhone and easily transfer them back to your photo library on your Mac or PC.

In terms of battery life, iPhone 3G delivers 10 hours of talk time on 2G networks and 5 hours using 3G, with up to 5 to 6 hours of web browsing, up to 7 hours for video playback and up to 24 hours for audio playback.

A 16GB iPhone 3G will retail for $299 and also come in white.

iPhone 3G will also leverage MobileMe, a re-branded version of Apple's .Mac Internet service that pushes email, contacts, and calendars from an online "cloud" to native applications on iPhone, iPod touch, Macs and PCs. With MobileMe email, messages are pushed instantly to iPhone, removing the need to manually check email and wait for downloads, and push keeps contacts and calendars continuously up-to-date so changes made on one device are automatically updated on other devices. With iPhone, you can even snap a photo and post it directly to a MobileMe Gallery to share with friends and family.

iPhone 3G will go on sale in the US on July 11 for a suggested retail price of $199 for the 8GB model and $299 for the 16GB model in both Apple and AT&T's retail stores. Prices factor in a new two year contract with AT&T for qualifying customers. The 8GB model is available only with a glossy black back while the 16GB model will available with a glossy white back (in addition to a black back).

iPhone 2.0 software will also be available on July 11 as a free software update via iTunes 7.7 or later for all existing iPhone customers. The update will cost $9.95 for existing iPod touch owners.

Στην Ελλάδα θα το φέρει η Vodafone αλλά δυστυχώς μετά τις 11 Ιουλίου. Στο apple.com λέει "Coming soon". Νομίζω πάντως ότι τα 199$ είναι τραγικά λίγα! Ακόμα και με 300 ευρώ να έρθει εδώ, είναι και πάλι τραγικά λίγα, δεδομένου ότι για την μπακατέλα που έχω τώρα πλήρωσα 350 και απλά θέλω να το πετάξω από το παράθυρο όταν βλέπω το iPhone! Δεδομένου ότι το iPhone3G έχει και GPS πλέον, και είναι ανοιχτό σε 3rd party apps, θα μπορεί να τα κάνει όλα. Η Apple έχει ήδη ένα accesory που έχει κεραία ραδιοφώνου και δίνει δυναντότητα ραδιοφώνου σε όλα τα ipod. Αυτό το εξάρτημα παίζει και στο iPhone αλλά δεν έχει ενδείξεις στην οθόνη. Νομίζω ότι σε πολύ λίγο καιρό κάποιος θα έχει φτιάξει μια εφαρμογή που θα παίζει και σε iPhone, οπότε να και το ράδιο!
Πλήρη υποστύριξη αρχείων iWork και Office, πλήρες sync με Εxchange ++....

Όλα τα λεφτά η ατάκα από την πρώτη του διαφήμιση:
"Finally, a phone that can beat the iPhone... meet the iPhone3G!!!"

Απλά το θέλω χτές!!! Και αν έρθει όντως μόνο με 200$, δε θα πάρω μόνο ένα!!!!!!!

Πράγματι, εντυπωσιακή συσκευή - κι εγώ την γλυκοκοίταγα...

Αλλά:
- Κάμερα ακόμα χάλια (και χωρίς μπροστινή κάμερα)
- Πολύ καλή τιμή, αλλά με πόσα χρόνια δέσμευση συμβολαίου;
- MMS ακόμα; Θα θέλουμε third party app;;

Πάντως για το επόμενο κινητό μου αυτή τη στιγμή είμαι ανάμεσα στο iPhone 3G και σε ένα Nokia που θα έχει την επόμενης γενιάς Symbian πλατφόρμα (αυτή με το ScreenPlay).

-Έχω να χρησιμοποιήσω την κάμερα του τωρινού κινητού μου σχεδόν 1 χρόνο (3.2 MP). Έχω δει φωτό από iPhone και μπορώ να πώ ότι είναι πιο ευκρινείς από αυτές που βγαζει το δικό μου. Επίσης το τωρινό κιν μου έχει μπροστινή κάμερα και δεν την έχω χρησιμοποιήσει ποτέ! Ποτέ όμως! Δεν νομίζ ων κάνω videochat ποτέ στο δρόμο για να μου χρειάζεται!
