Apple on Tuesday closed out its Macworld keynote address by introducing MacBook Air, the world’s thinnest notebook, measuring an unprecedented 0.16-inches at its thinnest point, while its maximum height of 0.76-inches is less than the thinnest point on competing notebooks.

MacBook Air features a 13.3-inch LED-backlit widescreen display, a full-size and backlit keyboard, a built-in iSight video camera for video conferencing, and a spacious trackpad with multi-touch gesture support so users can pinch, rotate and swipe.

MacBook Air is powered by a 1.6 GHz or 1.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 4MB L2 cache, and includes as standard features 2GB of memory, an 80GB 1.8-inch hard drive, and the latest 802.11n Wi-Fi technology and Bluetooth 2.1.
“We’ve built the world’s thinnest notebook—without sacrificing a full-size keyboard or a full-size 13-inch display,” said Apple chief executive Steve Jobs. “When you first see MacBook Air, it’s hard to believe it’s a high-performance notebook with a full-size keyboard and display. But it is."

MacBook Air has a vibrant 13.3-inch LED-backlit glossy widescreen display that is energy efficient, and its spacious trackpad offers multi-touch gesture support for pinch, rotate and swipe, making it more intuitive than ever to browse and rotate photos or zoom into web pages in Safari.

MacBook Air also features a full-size keyboard design in a sleek and durable aluminum enclosure. The backlit keyboard makes it ideal for dimly lit environments such as airplanes, studios or conference halls, and a built-in ambient light sensor automatically adjusts the brightness of the keys as well as the display brightness for optimal visibility.

MacBook Air delivers up to five hours of battery life for wireless productivity and includes AirPort Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi networking, which delivers up to five times the performance and twice the range of 802.11g. Apple’s Migration Assistant software now enables users to quickly transfer files, applications and preferences from your old Mac to MacBook Air right over your wireless network.

η τεχνολογία για να γίνει ένα laptop τόσο λεπτό είναι σίγουρα εντυπωσιακή, αλλά "το πάχος δεν είναι το ιερό δισκοπότηρο".

Σε 10 χρόνια θα λένε ότι η Apple είναι η εταιρία που έβγαλε το iPod, το iPhone και το MacBook Air!

Το τελευταίο είναι το νέο παιδί της οικογένειας που πρόκειται σύντομα να βγει στην αγορά. Το κοινό που έχει με όλα τα υπόλοιπα Laptop είναι ότι είναι φορητό!!

Βασικά χαρακτηριστικά του είναι τρία:

* Είναι κατασκευασμένο για να επικοινωνεί με όλες τις συσκευές ασύρματα.

Solid state είναι οι δίσκοι χωρίς κινητά μέρη, όπως η κάρτα του κινητού τηλεφώνου.

Due to its ultra-thin profile, Apple's new MacBook Air was designed with an integrated 37-watt-hour lithium-polymer battery that is not user-replaceable. Though this has caused some initial concern amongst potential adopters, AppleInsider has learned that the replacement process is quite trivial.

According to people familiar with the new-generation notebook, there are no special tools or knowledge required to swap out the MacBook Air's battery, which Apple has billed its "thinnest ever" in a product. Instead, the process requires a single size-0 type philips screwdriver and some diligence.

Once flipped upside down, the MacBook Air's bottom cover is easily unscrewed and removed, providing immediate access to the battery cavity. From there, the battery can be unscrewed from the chassis with the same screwdriver and unplugged from the circuit board with a simple tug -- it's not soldered to the board.

The entire process, according to those in the known, can be completed by any service technician in as little as three minutes.

For its part, Apple has announced its intent to offer a MacBook Air Out-of-Warranty Battery Replacement Program, which promises authorized replacements for US $129. The mail-in repair process normally takes 5 business days, the company says.

Given the simplicity of the upgrade, however, it's possible that Apple will in time offer the service on-demand at its retail stores. Similarly, third parties could also offer in-home do-it-yourself kits should they be able to acquire battery cells that meet Apple's standard for the MacBook Air.

There's no word, however, whether the latter process would void the notebook's warranty in Apple's eyes. In the meantime, the company recommends MacBook Air users follow these instructions for optimizing life span and battery life.

MacBook Air's processor riddle solved
Apple's new MacBook Air subnotebook raised eyebrows by using a mysterious new, ultra-compact Core 2 Duo processor. New research, however, reveals it to be a blend of old and new technology designed to make few sacrifices.

An in-depth study of the design by AnandTech founder Anand Lal Shimpi explains that the processor is actually based on Intel's 65 nanometer (65nm) Merom architecture with an 800MHz bus, first released in May of last year. All of Apple's current iMac, MacBook, and MacBook Pro models use some form of the processor at a higher clock speed.

But rather than struggle to fit the hot, standard-sized processor package into the tight confines of the Air's chassis -- a feat deemed impossible by Jobs during the computer's introduction -- Apple appears to have called on Intel to accelerate the release of an extra-small chip package not scheduled to arrive until the launch of the Montevina notebook platform in mid-2008.

"The MacBook Air uses the Intel Core 2 Duo Processor and Intel 965GMS chipset with integrated [graphics] using a new miniaturized package technology. This new CPU and chipset allows for approximately 60% reduction in total footprint," Intel explains in a response to the technology site.

The mixture of current and next-generation parts creates an unusual blend of performance characteristics. The new Core 2 Duo slots just above the Low Voltage (LV series) variants in terms of clock speed and power use -- starting at 1.6GHz with 20 watts of thermal design power versus 1.4GHz and 17 watts -- but is considerably more efficient than the regular mobile processor, which consumes 35 watts of peak power at a minimum 1.8GHz.

Apple may have been making "tradeoffs" to get the finished MacBook Air on the market in time, Lal Shimpi speculates.

As for the reason behind choosing the new variant instead of stock low or ultra-low voltage Core 2 models, the report suggests only that Apple's main concern was to avoid the low speeds of these chips while compromising as little as possible on energy efficiency or heat.

"Performance appears to be all but solved [for subnotebooks]," Lal Shimpi says. "The fact that Apple can cram a nearly-2GHz Core 2 Duo into the MacBook Air either means that Moore's law has caught up with our desires or Apple is going to make it so you can no longer have children."

Για όσους δεν έχουν καταλάβει, μιλάμε φυσικά για το τελευταίο κατόρθωμα του Steve Jobs, το υπέρλεπτο notebook. Ανάμεσα στις υπόλοιπες αρετές του, το Macbook Air έχει, σύμφωνα με την Apple, και φιλικό προς το περιβάλλον προφίλ, αφού είναι ο πρώτος υπολογιστής της εταιρείας στον οποίο δε χρησιμοποιείται υδράργυρος και αρσενικό για την κατασκευή της οθόνης, ενώ σε καμία ηλεκτρονική πλακέτα δεν περιέχεται PVC και BFRs.


Σύμφωνα, πάντως, με τον Rick Hind, νομικό διευθυντή της εκστρατείας της Greenpeace κατά των τοξικών, η Apple έχει κάνει μεν πρόοδο αλλά πως οι επιδόσεις της είναι ακόμα πολύ μέτριες, όπως ενός μαθητή του B-. "Ναι, η Apple γίνεται πράσινη, αλλά όχι αρκετά πράσινη. With Apple now competing fiercely against Dell and HP for mainstream notebooks and rapidly gaining market share, it's no surprise that Apple is leading the two contenders in its move into the ultra light notebook market.

Who is in the market to buy an ultralight Mac? Apparently Apple's market research is telling the company that it's well heeled business people who demand mobility first. Steve Jobs has previously talked a lot about building cheaper things that can be sold in volume rather than expensive things that target a niche market. The iPod, iPhone, Apple TV, and other recent products all fall into lower priced devices that the majority of Apple Store buyers can afford.


How The MacBook Air Stacks Up Against Other Ultra Light notebooks.


So what about the Air? At $1799, the new model is nearly twice the cost of an entry level MacBook. Clearly, it's not directed primarily at education. However, compared to other ultralight notebooks, the Air is very competitively priced. While clearance deals can be found among last year's models, the current Sony Vaio G series, Lenovo ThinkPad X60, Panasonic Toughbook R6, Fujitsu LifeBook s6510, and Asus U1F are all at least within $100 of the Air, and most of them are priced significantly higher when configured with the same processor, RAM and other core features of Apple's entry level Air configuration.

H αποκάλυψη του MacBook Air έφερε αρκετές αλλαγές στον τρόπο που σκέφτονται οι κατασκευαστές laptop, αφού ο εντυπωσιακός σχεδιασμός και οι καινοτομίες του προϊόντος της Apple είναι αρκετές. Η πρώτη παρουσίαση του MacBook Air στην Ελλάδα

H Multirama, σε συνεργασία με τη Rainbow, παρουσίασε στον Πειραιά το νέο MacBook Air της Apple.

Το πιο λεπτό laptop στον κόσμο, το MacBook Air, έχει πλαίσιο από αλουμίνιο, πάχος μόλις 4,06 χιλιοστά στο λεπτότερο σημείο και 19 χιλιοστά στο παχύτερο και βάρος μόλις 1,36 κιλά. Παρά το μικρό του μέγεθος, περιέχει ένα full-sized πληκτρολόγιο, οθόνη 13,3 ιντσών widescreen με LED-backlit και μπαταρία διάρκειας 5 ωρών. Πως περιγράφει ένας από τους πρώτους κατόχους του MacBook Air τις εμπειρίες του από την απόπειρα μεταφοράς του πιο λεπτού notebook σε αεροπορικό ταξίδι…

Το MacBook Air αποτελεί αναμφισβήτητα το πιο λεπτό notebook της αγοράς και είναι κατά κοινή ομολογία το πιο hot προϊόν της αγοράς αυτή τη στιγμή. Ένας από τους πρώτους κατόχους του πάντως, έχει λόγους να καταριέται για την αγορά του.

Όπως αναφέρει στο προσωπικό του blog σε ένα άρθρο με τίτλο «έχασα την πτήση μου εξαιτίας του Steve Jobs», ο Michael Nygard έχασε την πτήση του προς το San Jose όταν οι αρχές του αεροδρομίου δεν πείθονταν πως αυτό που κουβαλούσε ήταν φορητός υπολογιστής!

Ο αμερικάνος προσπάθησε να περάσει από το μηχάνημα ελέγχου, ωστόσο οι υπεύθυνοι ασφαλείας δεν είχαν δει ποτέ το MacBook Air και δεν πείθονταν ότι πρόκειται για φορητό υπολογιστή μιας και όπως είπαν «δεν εντόπισαν στο πίσω μέρος κάποιες εισόδους και στο πλαϊνό του τμήμα το slot κάποιου drive».

Η παρεξήγηση λύθηκε μετά από αρκετή ώρα (και αφού η πτήση είχε χαθεί), όταν ο υπεύθυνος του αεροδρομίου είδε με τα μάτια του πως το MacBook Air μπορεί να κάνει boot και να φορτώσει μια εφαρμογή…
