PhD position

Post by redlabel » Thu Sep 10, 2009 12:51 pm

The Radboud University of Nijmegen, the Netherlands, (in cooperation with TNO ICT Groningen) offers two 4-year PhD positions in the following two projects.

1) Revocable Privacy
------------------------
Security and privacy are often seen as opposite, irreconcilable, goals. Revocable privacy aims to bridge the two sides of the debate to break the status quo. Revocable privacy is a design principle (including the necessary toolbox) to build information systems that balance security and privacy needs. The underlying principle is to design a system that guarantees the privacy of its users, unless a user violates a predefined rule. This project aims to develop models, tools and techniques for revocable privacy. Next to "trusted third party" techniques, that require the participation of one or more trusted external third parties
to release certain personal information, the project will mainly focus on the development of "self-enforcing" systems (that do not depend on trust).

2) Identity Management for Mobile Devices
--------------------------------------------------
Mobile devices such as GSM phones, PDA's, RFID, offer a technological platform which can help solving the problems of ID management for the roaming user, as they can be employed as trusted control interface for applications using personal and privacy sensitive information. The aim of the project is to contribute to a solution to give the user full control over his mobile identity (i.e., the digital identity of an entity when using a mobile device), in a flexible and privacy-friendly manner, by relying on their mobile devices as identity proxy and identity agent.

The PhD students will be employed by the Radboud University Nijmegen and be stationed at TNO ICT Gronigen. This means the PhD students will be at TNO Groningen 4 (or 3) days a week, and at the Radboud University Nijmegen 1 (or 2) days a week.

We offer
- a salary starting at 2042 euro gross a month, and
- a dynamic working environment at the crossroads of applied and fundamental research.

The projects also has sufficient funds to support career development, conference visits and similar scientific activities.

You should
- have a MSc in computer science or a related field,
- have knowledge of or experience in computer security and/or applied cryptography,
- be motivated and able to perform research in an applied academic setting, and
- have good English writing and communication skills.

Please send me a CV and motivating letter before Monday October 12, 2009. Clearly indicate your preference for one of the projects. For more
