Postdoc position in Machine Learning (data fusion) at UCL

Post by The Punisher » Tue Jun 29, 2010 6:19 pm

Postdoc position in Machine Learning (data fusion) at the University College London (UCL)
University College London, **UCL Interaction Centre***

*Postdoc position in Machine Learning (data fusion): **Automatic
recognition of pain level and pain-related mood in pain rehabilitation***

Applications are invited for a postdoc on the design and development of
an intelligent system to enable ubiquitous monitoring and assessment of
patients' pain-related moods and movements. The position is based at the
UCL Interaction Centre. UCL Interaction Centre (UCLIC:
http://www.uclic.ucl.ac.uk/) is a Centre of Excellence in Human-Computer
Interaction drawing its members from both Computer Science Departments
and the Division of Psychology and Language Sciences

The research will be part of a multidisciplinary group within the
EPSRC-funded project Emo&Pain. Emo&Pain
((http://www.uclic.ucl.ac.uk/people/n.berthouze/EPain/) is a large
research project that brings together researchers from UCL, Imperial
College and Leicester University to improve self-management in patients
with chronic pain. Chronic pain is one of the big challenges facing
healthcare providers in the western world due to the rising number of
people with chronic health problems.

Under the supervision of Drs Nadia Berthouze (main PI, UCL) and Maja
Pantic (Imperial College), the post holder will develop a system to
recognize emotional states and pain level in patients with chronic back
pain. S/he will *investigate the integration of different modalities
(body movement, vocal expression, facial expression) to develop robust
tools for the multimodal recognition of naturalistic expressions of
pain-related behaviours: i.e., pain-related movements or physical
expressions of pain-related moods from behavioural cues during
self-directed therapy.* The project will involve signal processing as
well as the application of machine learning techniques and in particular
the application of data fusion techniques. The post holder will also
contribute to the dissemination of the research through publications in
academic conferences and journal papers as well as demonstration at
academic and public events.

Applicants should have obtained an excellent PhD in Machine Learning or
closely related subjects. Ideal candidates will have a strong background
in machine learning and signal processing. They should have demonstrated
potential for excellent research (e.g., as evidenced by a good
publication track record in international journals) and the capability
and motivation to collaborate within an interdisciplinary research group
with people from the various disciplines involved in this project.
Salary is at Grade 7 Scale 29-31 (31,778 - 33,542 per annum inclusive
of London Allowance). The post is available full time for 36 months from
November 2010.
