This node has been sponsored by the Greek Research and Technology Network (GRNET) and is located at the Athens Internet Exchange.
The K-root server is one of the 13 DNS root servers that resolve lookups for domain names all over the world and form a critical part of the global Internet infrastructure. The K-root service is provided by a set of distributed mirror instances using IPv4 anycast. Each mirror instance announces the 193.0.14.0/24 network in AS25152. A K-root mirror instance consists of a cluster of server machines running the NSD name server software.
Using anycast makes the root server system more resilient to Denial of Service (DoS) attacks and improves the DNS response for local communities by providing shorter paths between clients and servers.

Για όσους δεν το πιάσανε με την πρώτη,
στις 26/04 εγκαταστάθηκε στο AIX(Athens Information Exchange: http://www.aix.gr - To οποίο είναι στο κτίριο του ΟΤΕ απέναντί μας και αποτελεί τον κύριο κορμο(backbone) της Ελλάδας με το εξωτερικό) ένα ακόμη mirror για το DNS.
Το θέμα είναι ότι
ο server αυτός έιναι global,συνεπώς οποιοδήποτε name του ζητηθεί(κάτω απο το .) θα το βρεί απο εκεί και δεν θα χρειαστεί να κάνει query πχ τον .edu hostmaster. στην πραγματικότητα δεν είναι ένας απλός server αλλά έαν cluster απο servers όλοι με την ίδια ip χρησιμοποιώντας την τεχνολογία unycast. Αυτό έχει σαν αποτέλεσμα όταν κάνεις ένα query στιν ip του να μην ξέρεις ποιός server θα απαντήσει έτσι ώστε να υπάρχει καλύτερη ασφάλεια απο DDoS επιθέσεις.
