Apple's current IMC (Independant Marketing Company) in Greece, Rainbow Computer, could see its contract terminated within the next few months in favor of Germanos, a major player of Greece's consumer electronics retail market.

We're not sure yet if Germanos will be an IMC as it's the case for Rainbow or just Apple's biggest reseller for Greece as we had no word from sources on the possibility that Apple brings its own presence in Greece through an "Apple Hellas" or "Apple Greece" subsidiary.

More than a decade of un-heard complains

Apple enthusiasts in Greece have been complaining at Rainbow's poor performance for more than a decade. More specifically, the Greek distributor provides shipping times that could easily reach one or two months for a Mac, poor support, expensive Greek OS localization and very marginal retail presence compared to what Germanos can provide.

Last year, Dimistris Karakatsanis, one of these Greek Apple enthusiasts even decided to launch a site called "WeWantAppleGreece.com". The site is highlighting all the problems a Greek can face when he wants to buy or obtain support for an Apple product and is asking Apple through an online petition to improve the situation for Apple's Greek customers and eventually bring its own presence in the country.

Moreover, back in 2004, while Greece was hosting the Olympic Games, we had our own anecdotal experience with a Rainbow "Apple Store Demo Centre" when we visited Akadimia's Street store. After trying to buy an accessory from this store, the staff told us that if we wanted to buy something, we had to create an account on the Greek online store then order it from there. As the name suggested, it wasn't a store but just a demo center with no ability to sell anything.

But Greeks started hoping for a better future on late January, when Apple Europe's CEO was quoted on an Italian online publication saying "many things will change in Greece within the next six months". Now it looks obvious that one of the actions that Mr. Cagni took was to look for another distribution deal for Greece.

Cosmote could win the iPhone deal

With less certainty, sources dropped us a second hint regarding the possible carrier that will sell the iPhone in Greece. The sources notice Germanos' very tight links with Cosmote which is Greece's biggest telecom company for Internet, mobile and fixed communications. Cosmote actually holds a strategic stake in Germanos which is already distributing all the products of the telecom company in Greece.

The deal with the retailer could pave the way for an Apple-Cosmote Deal for the distribution of the iPhone in Greece through Germanos' retail stores and with Cosmote contracts.

Αν γίνει αυτό... απλά υποκλείνομαι στο Γερμανό! Επιτέλους να λάβει τέλος αυτή η απαράδεκτη υποστύριξη της Rainbow! Άντε μπας κα δούμε και προγράματα τύπου "Apple Care" και στην Ελλάδα! Ακούς εκέι να μην μπορώ να πάρω επέκταση εγγύησης από τη Rainbow!

To i-phone που κυκλοφορεί στην Αμερική θα έχει διαφορετικά χαρ/κα απ'αυτό που θα κυκλοφορήσει εδώ και κατ'επέκταση σε όλη την Ευρώπη ή θα είναι ακριβώς το ίδιο;

Προς το παρόν έχει ανακοινωθεί ότι θα κυκλοφορήσει στην Αγγλία και τη Γερμανία ακριβώς το ιδιο με τις Αμερικής. Φήμες λένε ότι στο πρώτο τρίμηνο του 2008 θα κυκλοφορήσει σε όλη την Ευρωπη με ενσωματωμένο 3G και ίσως GPS.

Χτες περνώντας από ένα Γερμανό λέω κάτσε να μπω να ρωτήσω μήπως ξέρουν πότε θα έρθει και τι χαρ/κα θα έχει.
Η απάντηση που πήρα ήταν ότι αναμένεται 26-28 Δεκεμβρίου,αλλά δεν είναι κ σίγουρο,σίγουρα θα ξέρουν μόλις 2 μέρες πριν ξεκινήσουν οι παραδόσεις,δε θα έχει gps,ϊσως να έχει 3G,κ φυσικά θα λειτουργεί κανονικά το google maps αν έχεις σύνδεση.Γενικώς τα παιδιά εκεί έδειχναν γνώστες κ πολύ ενημερωμένοι/ψαγμένοι.

Αυτά.Γνώμες;Γνωρίζει κάποιος κάτι άλλο;

Άρα τελικά θα διατίθεται μόνο με σύνδεση Cosmote? Με τη προγραμματα σύνδεσης θα το δίνει? Θα υπάρχει κάποιο με απεριόριστο data rate μέσω GPRS ή 3G σε λογική τιμή?

Τους πέτυχα στο κλείσιμο(φαντάσου ότι είχαν βγάλει σκούπα κ καθάριζαν,αλλά παρολ'αυτά με εξυπηρέτησαν)οπότε δεν ήθελα να τους πρήξω άλλο.

Φαντάζομαι ότι δε θα υπάρξει κάποιο ιδιαίτερο,πέραν των ήδη υπαρχόντων,πρόγραμμα για το i-phone,εκτός κ αν κρίνουν ότι το google maps το απαιτεί.

Αν βγει πάντως με πρόγραμμα απεριόριστης χρήσης κτλ το πήρα...χτες!

Μονο το gmaps είναι? Mail? Browsing? IMing?? Υποτίθεται ότι είναι Internet Device! Τόσο ντόρο έχει κάνει και δε θα βγάλουν πρόγραμμα για αυτό? Εδώ ολόκληρη AT&T έβγαλε ειδικά προγράμματα περιόριστου data rate μέσω EDGE!

Ερώτηση κρίσεως.Αν είχατε τη δυνατότητα να το αγοράσετε αυτή τη στιγμή χωρίς σύνδεση(υποθέτουμε ότι έχετε ήδη σύνδεση) και να το ξεκλειδώσετε με τα προγράμματα που κυκλοφορούν,θα το κάνατε ή θα περιμένατε να έρθει "κανονικά" και να κάνετε νέα σύνδεση;

Περιμένω και κάνω αναννέωση συνβολαίου με αλλαγή προγράμματος σε αυτό που προσφέρεται! Αν δεν γίνεται αναννέωση, κάνω διακοπή και νέα σύνδεση με φορητότητα αριθμού!
Γενικά δεν το παίρνω σπασμένο, γιατί θα το χρησοπληρώσω κιόλας (750 ευρά και βάλε)!

Προσωπικά το χω ήδη πάρει. 320 ευρώ βγήκε το 4άρι από ebay με τα ταχυδρομικά. Παίρνεις το ρίσκο της έλλειψης support (αφού αναγκαστηκά το ξεκλειδώνεις για να δουλέψει) αλλά σαν λεφτά δεν είναι πολλά δεδομένης της συσκευής.

Δε συζητάω να σκάσω τα 700+ που ζητάνε εδώ,αλλά κανένα e-bay σε πολύ λογικά χρήματα.

Browsing και mail δουλεύουν σίγουρα over wifi, και δεν βλέπω λόγο να μην δουλεύουν και over gprs/edge.

Η οθόνη είναι στα 16 εκατ. χρώματα αν δεν κάνω λάθος.

Γενικά είμαι πολύ ευχαριστημένος. Έχει κάποιες ελλείψεις (λίγο "basic" sms λειτουργία, δεν υποστηρίζει το PEAP πρωτόκολλο για το wireless της σχολής, και μερικά άλλα) αλλά με καλύπτει, είναι φορητό, με κορυφαία ποιότητα κατασκευής (ίσως το καλύτερο κατασκευαστικά κινητό που έχει περάσει από τα χέρια μου), εύκολο στη χρήση, παίζει με itunes, το browsing/youtube είναι απλά κορυφή. Για τα λεφτά που το πήρα είναι απλά άψογο.

At a meeting of the Churchill Club in Santa Clara, California AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said “You’ll have it next year,” in response to the “when will we get a 3G iPhone” question that I’m sure he gets weekly (if not daily).

He could not further elaborate on speed, price, or exact time of release, but he is positive that we’ll see it next year.

The primary reason that we don’t already have a G3 iPhone is because of battery life. Battery life on 3G phone is terrible - as bad as 2 hours of talk time. Imagine how show the iPod video playback would be if the talk time alone was only 2 hours. You wouldn’t even be able to watch a movie…heck maybe even a half our sitcom…on the thing.

Battery life is the primary reason that the iPhone isn’t 3G yet, but hopefully that will be resolved within the next 12 months.

Η σελίδα 9to5mac υποστηρίζει ότι η Apple θα έχει πουλήσει περίπου 5 εκατ. iPhone παγκοσμίως πριν το MacWorld 2008 τον Ιανουάριο που μας έρχεται, στο San Francisco, κάτι που θα τους φέρει αρκετά κοντά στον αρχικό τους στόχο που ήταν να πουλήσουν 10 εκατ. κομμάτια μέχρι το τέλος του 2008.

Οι αναφορές λένε ότι περίπου 1 εκατ. από τις υπάρχουσες πωλήσεις έχουν γίνει στην Ευρώπη, παρόλο που υπάρχουν μερικά προβλήματα και κάποιοι λένε ότι δεν τα πάει καθόλου καλά. Τα καλά νέα για την Apple δε σταματάνε εδώ. Το iPhone, ένα από τα λεγόμενα Smartphone της αγοράς, έχει ξεπεράσει σε πωλήσεις τα αντίστοιχα smartphone που τρέχουν Windows και πλέον κατέχει το 27% της αγοράς των smartphone (περασμένο τρίμηνο).

GPS manufacturer Garmin has a secret product that they’re going to unveil at Macworld 2008. The software is called “Bobcat” according to the Garmin Blog.

The blog post also mention “new Mac-compatible software and hardware” that Garmin will be showcasing. There is no official word on just what “Bobcat” or the new software and hardware will be - but I think it’s interesting to mention that “Bobcat” is mentioned in a separate paragraph from the other statement.

Could “Bobcat” somehow be for the iPhone? I don’t know - that’s pure speculation, but you can bet I’ll be checking by the the Garmin booth at Macworld to find out.

Google's iPhone portal gets a revamp

Google is introducing a new version of its customised iPhone web portal that further integrates the company's offerings into Apple's popular handset. The revamped service will be on display at this week's Macworld Expo in San Francisco, and available to anyone who uses the iPhone.

The services are accessed simply by directing the iPhone's Safari Web browser to Google's home page. Previously, iPhone users had access to special versions of google Search, Gmail, Calendar, Reader and other services working from a unified interface on iPhone's Safari.

Google released an update to its offerings for the iPhone, hoping to continue a trend that recently saw the iPhone briefly become the No. 1 mobile phone hitting Google sites.

Despite its small share of the overall mobile phone market, the iPhone spiked to No. 1 on Dec. 25 among phones using Google's services, beating out mobile makers that have been selling smartphones for many years.

Google revealed a chart showing that around the middle of November, iPhone users began to surpass BlackBerry customers in accessing Google, though they were still behind Symbian and Windows Mobile users. But on Dec. 25, iPhone users shot above them all, then quickly settled into the second-largest Google user base.

By the end of September, the last quarter in which Apple reported numbers, Apple had sold more than 1.3 million iPhones. By comparison, Nokia has sold 50 million of its N-series line of phones, said Avi Greengart, an analyst at Current Analysis. At the end of December, there were 12 million subscribers using BlackBerry devices.

"One thing this does is shows that Apple has done a remarkable job of publicizing some of these capabilities, even if they're not the first to bring the capability to market," Greengart said. Some of Google's mobile services, like Google Maps, were already available on mobile phones before the iPhone hit the market. Yet, clearly, iPhone customers are using the services more frequently. "Either because of the design or PR or brand, or in all possibility because of the implementation ... Apple has popularized the notion that you can do more on the phone than you might have tried to do previously," he said.

iPhone customers will indeed be able to do more using Google services, with the updated offerings unveiled Monday.

iPhone users can now customize Google services through the menu bar and iGoogle home page. When iPhone users visit Google.com, they can choose Google applications to appear as links in a menu bar that runs across the top of the page. Signing in once, users can then access a variety of Google services, including Gmail, Calendar, Reader, Docs, and Picasa.
